WEEK 13: Final

Your final has arrived! Here is what you need to do:

  1. Pick three principles or doctrines from the Book of Mormon between the Title Page and Alma 29, and write out the principle in one clear and concise statement.
  2. Pick one statement from the October 2013 General Conference which clearly connects with your chosen principle or doctrine.
  3. Take points one and two and go write them in your scriptures.
  4. Post a copy of your principle and statements here on the blog page and you are done.
Here are a couple of examples:

  • 2 Nephi 32:5: Principle: Because I have been baptized and received the Holy Ghost, if I am obedient and worthy, I can receive the promptings of the Holy Ghost to show me the things I should do in my life. Elder M. Russell Ballard simply said, "Heed the promptings of the Spirit" ("Put Your Trust in the Lord," Oct. 2013 Gen Con).
  • Alma 5:14: Principle: Being born again, then honoring the sacred covenants I have made with God, leads to taking on the image of the countenance of the Savior. Elder Timothy J. Diches of the Seventy said, "The vicissitudes of life hep us fashion an eternal relationship with God--and engrave His image upon our countenance as we yield our hearts to Him" ("Wilt Thou Be Made Whole?" Oct. 2013 Gen Con).
LAST ITEM: YOU ARE NOT COMPLETE WITH THIS COURSE UNTIL YOU SEND ME AN EMAIL (palmersj@ldschurch.org) OR TEXT ME WITH YOUR NAME INCLUDED (719-447-4776) STATING YOU EITHER READ THE TITLE PAGE OF THE BOOK OF MORMON THROUGH ALMA 29 OR NOT. I NEED YOUR REPORT BY THE END OF THIS WEEK.

  1. 2 Nephi 31:20 Principle: Endurance is all about developing long lasting habits that sustains one’s life beyond death. Elder Richard G Maynes said, “Endurance is an important principle found within the doctrine of Jesus Christ. It is important because the quality of our eternal future is proportional to our ability to endure in righteousness. (“Strength to Endure,” Oct. 2013 Gen Con)

  2. 1Nephi 11:25: Principle: Following along the rod of iron (the word of God) will lead us to God and His love and will protect us from the mists of darkness that surround us. President Boyd K. Packer said, “The scriptures hold the keys to spiritual protection. They contain the doctrine and laws and ordinances that will bring each child of God to a testimony of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Redeemer.” (“The Key to Spiritual Protection,” Oct. 2013 Gen. Conf)

Mosiah 4:11: Principle: It is important to retain in our remembrance our own nothingness compared to God. He has given everything to us, and through Him we can do all things; therefore, we must be meek and humble in all that we do. Elder Ulisses Soares of the Seventy said, “The humble are teachable, recognizing how dependent they are on God and desiring to be subject to His will. The humble are meek and have the ability to influence others to be the same. God’s promise to the humble is that He will lead them by the hand.” (“Be Meek and Lowly of Heart,” Oct. 2013 Gen. Conf)

Mosiah 12:19: Principle: We must be bold in defending truth in these later days, even as Abinidi was bold in testifying before king Noah and his priests. Elder Robert D. Hales talked about how his Dad had drawn him a picture of a knight in armor and how it related to defending the kingdom of God. He said, “As he drew and read from the scriptures, I learned how to be a faithful priesthood holder—to protect and defend the kingdom of God.” (“Stand Strong in Holy Places,” Oct. 2013 Gen. Conf)

  3. Elder Gérald Caussé Oct 2013
Elder Caussé quotes when Paul teaches that God is no respecter of persons. When ye minister unto the least of thy brethren, ye minister unto me. I think of
Nephi ministering unto Zoram. Let's face it: Zoram really had nothing going
on--his master had just been slain, the plates gone, and Jerusalem was about to be destroyed. You could consider him the least of our brethren yet Nephi saved him by inviting him to come unto Christ in 1 Nephi 4:34-35.

Elder Richard G. Scott Oct 2013
Elder Scott teaches that service is one of the best ways to live the Atonement.
It can have an indelible impact on others just like Alma's supplication for his
son did in Mosiah 27:14: "And again, the angel said: Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith."

    Elder Ullises Soares Oct 2013
Elder Soares quotes Mormon who teaches that a man cannot have faith and hope save he is meek and lowly in heart. I know this is true because my testimony is strongest when I am most humble in thought and deed. This reminds me of the following verse in Alma 29:4 where Alma the Younger teaches about Heavenly Father's plan and our own faith: "I ought not to harrow up in my desires the firm decree of a just God, for I know that he granteth unto men according to their desire, whether it be unto death or unto life; yea, I know that he allotteth unto men, yea, decreeth unto them decrees which are unalterable, according to their wills, whether they be unto salvation or unto destruction."

  4. 2 Ne 2:25 We have the opportunity on this earth to experience joy through our righteous choices and actions.
Henry B. Eyering (To my Grandchildren) – “My message then to my grandchildren, and to all of us trying to forge eternal families, is that there is joy guaranteed for the faithful.”

2 Ne 9: 51 Live within your means
David A. Bednar (The Windows of Heaven) – “First, the Church lives within its means and does not spend more than it receives. Second, a portion of the annual income is set aside as a reserve for contingencies and unanticipated needs. For decades the Church has taught its membership the principle of setting aside additional food, fuel, and money to take care of emergencies that might arise. The Church as an institution simply follows the same principles that are taught repeatedly to the members.”

Jacob 3:1-3 The righteous have reason to rejoice
Dieter F. Uchtdorf (Come, Join with Us) – Whole talk, “why would anyone join such a church? section particularly… A third reason why people join the Church is because walking the path of discipleship leads to precious blessings.

  5. 2 Nephi 9:24 If we do not endure to the end, we must all be damned. Elder Richard J Maynes [The Strength to Endure] "Therefore, in order to receive the greatest of all the blessings of our Heavenly Father, which is eternal life, we must complete the appropriate ordinance work and then continue to keep the associated covenants. In other words, we must successfully endure."

2 Nephi 1:21 If we all come together in one mind and one heart, united in all things, we will not come down into captivity. Elder Edward Dube [Look Ahead and Believe]--"As we look ahead and believe, we need this same teamwork in hastening the work of salvation as we invite others to come unto Christ."

Mosiah 2:22 Keep His commandments and we will prosper. President Henry B Eyring [To My Grandchildren] "...a loving Heavenly Father has set the same path to happiness for all of His children. Whatever our personal characteristics or whatever will be our experiences, there is but one plan of happiness. That plan is to follow all the commandments of God."

  6. Alma 7:10-12 Jesus came to earth to suffer all things to save us from death and sin and to know how to help us in our trials. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland "Of greatest assurance in God’s plan is that a Savior was promised, a Redeemer, who through our faith in Him would lift us triumphantly over those tests and trials, even though the cost to do so would be unfathomable for both the Father who sent Him and the Son who came."

Mosiah 27:14/Alma 13:24 God prepares many ways to bring his children back to him including heavenly and human angels who answer the prayers of loved ones. President Henry B. Eyring "I have prayed with faith that someone I loved would seek and feel the power of the Atonement. I have prayed with faith that human angels would come to their aid, and they came. God has devised means to save each of His children. For many, that involves being placed with a brother or a sister or a grandparent who loves them no matter what they do."

2 Nephi 2:27-28 We can be delivered from misery and captivity by choosing to follow the Savior. Elder Quentin L. Cook "If we are true to His light, follow His commandments, and rely on His merits, we will avoid spiritual, physical, and intellectual bondage as well as the lamentation of wandering in our own wilderness, for He is mighty to save."

  7. Alma 26:12 If I am faithful to the Lord, then I can receive His strength, and through His strength I can do all things and accomplish many might miracles. In his opening address at Conference, President Monson promised "He will assist us in our labors if we will act in faith to fulfill His work."
Alma 26: 22 If we repent and are faithful, bringing forth good works, then we will be blessed to bring thousands of souls to repentance. Elder Ballard said "I can testify to you that the Lord will hear your prayers and you will have many opportunities now and for years to come to introduce the gospel of Jesus Christ to Heavenly Father’s precious children."
1 Nephi 3:7 If we try our best to keep the commandments of God, He will provide the way and help us to be successful. Even in trying times, if we are faithful, God will strengthen us to keep His commandments and follow Him. President Monson gave this promise: "Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, He is with us. He has promised that this will never change."
